Building Sovereign Hydrographic Capability in the Maldives

Seismic Asia Pacific is proud to have partnered with the Maldives in strengthening sovereign hydrographic capability through the delivery of advanced multibeam sonar systems, software, and training. This collaboration represents a significant step forward in supporting safer navigation, maritime security, and coastal management for the island nation.

Partnership and Delivery

As part of Australia’s partnership with the Maldives through the Defence Cooperation Boat program, Seismic Asia Pacific recently delivered a comprehensive hydrographic survey package to the Maldivian National Defence Force (MNDF).

The package included:

  • NORBIT Subsea iWBMS multibeam sonar – delivering high-resolution bathymetry for charting and navigation.

  • NORBIT Portus Pole – providing robust deployment flexibility from small craft.

  • AML Sound Velocity Profiler – ensuring data accuracy through precise sound velocity measurements.

  • HYPACK and CARIS software suite – for acquisition and advanced processing of hydrographic data.

Seismic Asia Pacific’s team was on the ground in Malé to oversee the delivery, installation, and commissioning of the equipment, as well as to provide training for MNDF personnel.

A key focus of this collaboration was not only delivering equipment, but also ensuring sustainable sovereign capability. Seismic Asia Pacific conducted hands-on training sessions with the MNDF, equipping their hydrographic unit with the knowledge and confidence to plan, execute, and process their own surveys.

This investment in skills and technology now empowers the MNDF to undertake independent hydrographic surveys for critical applications such as:

  • Navigational charting

  • Port and harbour safety

  • Coastal zone management

  • Maritime security operations

A Growing Strategic Relationship

This initiative underscores the broader partnership between Australia and the Maldives, building resilience in maritime governance across the Indian Ocean region. For the Maldives, a nation of dispersed islands reliant on maritime access, the ability to maintain accurate charts and manage their coastal environment is vital for safety, trade, and national security.

Speaking after the completion of the project, Seismic Asia Pacific’s Business Development Representative who assisted with the installation and training, Jeremy Monteath, reflected:

“It was a privilege to represent Seismic Asia Pacific on-site and to work alongside such motivated personnel. We are grateful for the trust placed in us and proud to help build local capability that will benefit Maldivian waters for years to come.”

By combining advanced hydrographic systems with training and ongoing support, Seismic Asia Pacific remains committed to empowering regional partners with the tools and expertise they need to safeguard their waters.

This successful delivery to the Maldives highlights how collaboration, technology, and training can work hand-in-hand to build sovereign capability and strengthen maritime safety across the region.
